What drives iso-Octyl acrylate price spikes in China's coatings and adhesives market?
2-EHA price volatility in China is primarily feedstock-driven. In December 2023, 2-EHA rose over 1,000 yuan/ton, up 12.8% month-on-month, as butanol and isooctanol prices strengthened on tight supply—some plants took unscheduled maintenance, and winter logistics constraints prompted downstream pre-buying. By end-December, East China 2-EHA was quoted at 14,000-14,300 yuan/ton. However, the traditional off-season for coatings meant slow downstream pass-through, capping further gains. The product's role as a soft monomer for pressure-sensitive adhesives ties its demand to packaging and logistics growth, which has been robust due to e-commerce. Yet, supply-side additions from integrated players like Guangxi Huayi and BASF Zhanjiang are increasing, potentially softening future price spikes as feedstock cost increases are absorbed by larger, more efficient producers.
