What drives the shift from liquid nitrogen delivery to on-site PSA generation in China?
On-site PSA nitrogen generation is gaining ground in China, especially for mid-sized users needing 3,000 Nm3/h or less. The economics are compelling: PSA systems can cut capital investment by 20-50% versus cryogenic air separation at similar scales, with faster startup of 15-30 minutes versus 12-24 hours for cryogenic plants. Energy consumption is also lower, with advanced units achieving around 0.36 kWh per Nm3 for 99.99% purity. For semiconductor packaging and electronics applications requiring 99.999% purity, PSA plus deoxo purification is becoming a viable alternative to liquid nitrogen, which carries purity variability and logistics risks. This trend is reshaping the merchant nitrogen market, pressuring traditional liquid nitrogen suppliers to focus on large-volume cryogenic contracts and high-purity electronic-grade niches.

The purity ceiling is the key constraint. Standard PSA tops out around 99.999%, but advanced semiconductor fabs need 6N or higher. That's why we still see liquid nitrogen dominance in leading-edge chipmaking, while PSA captures the 5N and below segment. Watch for hybrid models where PSA provides bulk supply and liquid nitrogen covers peak or ultra-high-purity demand.
