What is cracked naphthalene fraction and how is it produced?
Cracked naphthalene fraction, also known as cracked diesel, is a byproduct of hydrocarbon cracking for ethylene production. It is drawn from the side stream of the oil wash tower (primary fractionator) during cracked gas separation, with a boiling range of approximately 200-300°C. Its composition is predominantly C10-C16 aromatics. Yield varies significantly with feedstock: when using diesel or heavy hydrocarbons as cracker feed, the yield is typically around 5% by mass, while naphtha or lighter feeds produce less. Beyond its traditional use as fuel oil for power generation and industrial boilers, it has gained strategic importance in China's anode coating material supply chain. Leading producer Xinde New Materials generates roughly 2 tons of cracked naphthalene fraction per 4 tons of ethylene tar processed into coumarone resin, making it a significant co-product whose sale helps offset raw material cost volatility.
