What is driving new capacity additions for 1,2-dichloropropane in China?
China's 1,2-dichloropropane supply landscape is shifting as several new projects come online. Hubei Jiarun Chemical is building a 20,000 t/y unit alongside 40,000 t/y of 1,2,3-trichloropropane and 10,000 t/y of dichloropropenes in Yunmeng, Hubei. Shandong Sanyue Chemical plans a 12,000 t/y plant in Wudi using DD mixture feedstock from epichlorohydrin byproduct streams. These projects reflect a broader trend of valorizing chlorination byproducts into higher-value downstream chlorinated solvents. Most output will feed solvent applications in paints, inks, and PVC adhesives, as well as pesticide intermediates. With multiple capacities slated for 2025-2026, the domestic market could face oversupply pressure unless export demand for this UN1279 Class 3 flammable liquid expands correspondingly.

    Watch the feedstock side too. 1,2-DCP is largely a co-product of chlorohydrin-based propylene oxide and epichlorohydrin routes. As PO producers shift to HPPO technology, byproduct DCP availability could tighten structurally, even as dedicated plants add capacity. Buyers should lock in annual contracts rather than rely on spot.
