What is driving the current supply-demand balance for diacetone alcohol in China?
China's diacetone alcohol (DAA) market is closely tied to acetone feedstock economics. Domestic production relies primarily on acetone condensation using alkaline catalysts, a process with relatively slow reaction rates and modest single-pass conversion. In 2023, Chinese DAA output reached approximately 133,800 tonnes, reflecting steady capacity expansion despite process limitations. Demand is underpinned by DAA's role as a high-boiling, low-toxicity solvent in coatings, paint thinners, and resin applications, alongside its use as an intermediate for mesityl oxide and methyl isobutyl ketone. The product's favorable miscibility profile supports consistent offtake across downstream sectors. However, supply growth has been gradual rather than explosive, keeping the market relatively balanced. Price movements largely track acetone cost swings, with additional pressure from environmental compliance costs affecting smaller producers.

Watch the acetone-to-DAA spread closely. Since DAA is a direct acetone derivative, any volatility in acetone pricing—whether from refinery output or import parity—tends to transmit quickly downstream. Buyers should also monitor logistics classifications, as DAA is a Class 3 flammable liquid (UN1148, PGII), which adds shipping complexity and cost for export-oriented trades.
