What is driving the recent price surge in China's isobutanol market?
China's isobutanol market has experienced extreme volatility, with prices swinging dramatically within a single month. In one January episode, isobutanol prices jumped from roughly 9,733 yuan/ton to a peak of 17,166 yuan/ton, a 76% spike within ten days, before retreating. The full-month gain still reached 58.22%. Major producers like Hualu Hengsheng and Shandong Zhenkun adjusted quotes frequently, reflecting tight supply conditions. This price action aligns with broader chemical market strength, where dozens of raw materials posted significant gains. Downstream demand from coatings, plasticizers, and acetate esters provided fundamental support, while supply-side constraints and speculative trading amplified the moves. The market remains sensitive to feedstock costs, particularly propylene and synthesis gas routes, and to shifts in downstream operating rates.
