Calcium carbide is a cornerstone of China's coal-based chemical strategy, a deliberate hedge against oil and gas supply disruptions. While the world relies on petroleum for plastics and chemicals, China has built an entire value chain from coal: carbide production feeds acetylene chemistry, which then branches into PVC, BDO, and other products. This route is technically demanding — it requires high-temperature electric furnaces and significant power input — but it leverages China's abundant coal reserves. In 2024, China produced 26.98 million tonnes of carbide, over 90% of global supply, despite operating below capacity. The strategic importance was highlighted during Middle East tensions, when oil price spikes made coal-based routes more competitive. However, the industry now faces a paradox: it is essential for energy security but also energy-intensive, drawing scrutiny under carbon neutrality goals. New capacity faces strict approval hurdles, forcing existing producers to optimize efficiency rather than expand.

    The export angle is often overlooked. China exports only about 156,000 tonnes annually, roughly 0.4% of output, with India as the top buyer. This means domestic pricing is insulated from global trade flows. For international buyers, this creates a two-tier market: Chinese domestic prices reflect local coal and power costs, while overseas buyers must factor in logistics and limited export availability.
