Phosphorus pentoxide is a critical intermediate for producing high-purity phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid, and phosphate esters used in flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, and pigments. In the halogen-free flame retardant space, red phosphorus and coated red phosphorus are major alternatives, with China's top producers—Chuanlin Chemical and Yunnan Jiangphosphorus—expanding capacity. Chuanlin's new 5,000 t/y red phosphorus line and Jiangphosphorus' 3,000 t/y coated red phosphorus project highlight growing investment in non-halogen systems, driven by stricter environmental and safety regulations in electronics and construction. Phosphorus pentoxide itself is also used directly as a dehydrating agent and in producing phosphate plasticizers and stabilizers.
