Where is capacity and downstream growth heading for Alcohols & Ethers?
Capacity is concentrating in integrated producers, and downstream is shifting toward higher-value uses. One leading domestic producer runs roughly 170,000 tonnes of glycol ether and glycol ether ester capacity, second in the country, with propylene glycol ethers and their esters as core products. Margins diverge sharply by grade: glycol ether series hold around 26 percent gross margin, while glycol ether esters sit near 7 percent, reflecting product-mix pressure. The growth story is electronic-grade material: propylene glycol methyl ether and its acetate serve as semiconductor and photoresist cleaning agents, and high-purity PMA is a key ArF photoresist resin raw material. Domestic supply of semiconductor-grade PM and PMA remains short.

    The electronic-grade angle is the real differentiator. Coating-grade glycol ethers are cyclical and crowded, but semiconductor-grade PM and PMA command premium pricing and face genuine supply scarcity in China. Producers with purification capability and integrated propylene oxide feedstock are best positioned to capture that margin rather than competing on commodity solvent volume.
