Why are sec-butyl acetate prices rising while downstream buying stays thin?
Sec-butyl acetate quotes have been climbing alongside xylene, yet terminal transactions show no volume growth. Downstream users are restocking only for immediate needs rather than building inventory, a classic price-up, volume-down signal. The squeeze runs through the whole chain: midstream resin and emulsion makers face feedstock at 70-85% of cost and must pass increases downstream, but coatings, appliance and auto-parts buyers resist, threatening to switch suppliers. If this divergence persists, the rally could break at some link, forcing midstream destocking and undercutting upstream pricing power.

Watch the feedstock side too. Sec-butyl acetate's cost support hinges on glacial acetic acid, which has been drifting lower. If acetic acid keeps weakening while demand stays soft, producers lose the cost floor that justified recent hikes, and the market tilts to a stable-to-weak bias rather than a sustained climb.
