Why is the petroleum resin testing standard GB/T 24138-2009 considered outdated for today's market?
The current national standard GB/T 24138-2009 only covers basic C5 and C9 petroleum resins produced via distillation or crude distillation. Since then, the industry has expanded to include DCPD resins, C5/C9 copolymers, tar resins, modified resins, and hydrogenated grades. Production now uses cationic catalysis, radical thermal polymerization, and hydrogenation. The standard's test parameters and methods no longer reflect advanced product requirements. Modern specifications typically include softening point, Gardner color, acid value, ash content, bromine value, n-heptane tolerance, wax cloud point, melt viscosity, and thermal stability. Hydrogenated resins additionally require yellow index and color stability testing. An updated standard is needed to align with current product quality demands and support high-end applications in food packaging and outdoor coatings.

    Until the new standard lands, buyers should specify their own test matrix. Softening point alone is insufficient; bromine value and thermal stability are critical for predicting performance in hot-melt and road-marking applications.
