Food: the active component of vinegar, used as a preservative and flavouring agent.
Textile: cellulose acetate fibre (acetic acid-based) is used in apparel, noted for its silk-like feel and drape.
Pharmaceutical: used in synthesis of drug intermediates and as an acidifying agent.

China is the world's largest acetic acid producer, with capacity accounting for a major share of global output. The industry is mature with a relatively concentrated market structure, though rapid capacity expansion has outpaced downstream demand growth, creating supply-demand imbalances. Production is largely coal-based via methanol carbonylation, with some oil-based routes.
