The environmental crackdown is actually supportive for TSP prices long-term. With supply constrained and global food security concerns driving fertilizer demand, the supply-demand gap could widen. However, watch for substitution risk from MAP/DAP if their prices become relatively more attractive to international buyers.
The export dependence creates vulnerability to policy shifts. China's fertilizer export inspection system introduced in late 2021 disrupted global supply and spiked prices. Buyers should monitor Chinese export quota announcements closely, as they directly impact TSP availability and pricing in key markets like Brazil and Southeast Asia.
Feedstock flexibility is underappreciated. Producers who can shift between TSP, purified phosphoric acid, and feed phosphates can arbitrage margins across segments. For buyers, tracking sulfur and ammonia prices gives early signals on TSP cost trends, as these inputs move faster than phosphate rock prices.
