Overview

MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether, 2-methoxy-2-methylpropane, CAS 1634-04-4) is a clear, colourless, volatile liquid with a density of 0.74, boiling point of 55.2 °C, and flash point of −28 °C. It is a polar ether used chiefly as a gasoline oxygenate and octane enhancer, and as a chemical intermediate.

Fuel: blended into gasoline at 2–8% by volume to raise octane and cut emissions, replacing tetraethyl lead.
Chemical intermediate: cracked to high-purity isobutylene, feeding over 50 downstream directions including pharmaceutical intermediates, polymers, pesticides, and dyes.
Solvent: high-purity grades serve as inert media for Grignard and organolithium reactions, HPLC/GC mobile phases, and extraction in natural-product and drug purification.
Standards & teaching: used to prepare reference solutions for environmental and petrochemical testing, and in university ether-property demonstrations.

China's MTBE capacity exceeds 13 million tonnes, overwhelmingly consumed in gasoline blending (about 95% or more), with chemical use small. Production is mainly etherification of isobutylene and methanol over macroporous strong-acid cation resin, with isomerisation, isobutane dehydrogenation, and propylene oxide/MTBE co-production routes also used. Traditional ether pre-C4 feedstock is limited, constraining capacity.

Shandong-based refiners – numerous integrated MTBE units tied to FCC gas fractionation.
