How do DOP and DOTP compare in performance, cost and regulatory acceptance for PVC applications?
DOP and DOTP are molecular isomers—both C8 alcohol esters with similar molecular weight around 390—but the carboxyl position difference drives major performance gaps. DOTP wins decisively on electrical insulation (10^14 vs 10^12 ohm-cm volume resistivity), heat aging (volatile loss under 8% vs 12%), low-temperature flexibility, and migration resistance. It also passes EU RoHS, REACH and FDA food-contact requirements, while DOP faces restrictions. The price gap is modest—roughly 8,500 yuan/ton for DOP versus 9,200 yuan/ton for DOTP in 2026 market conditions. For cable compounds requiring IEC 70°C/105°C ratings, DOTP is effectively mandatory. For general-purpose PVC film, artificial leather and toys where regulatory exposure is low, DOP remains cost-competitive. The structural trend is clear: DOTP surpassed DOP in capacity for the first time in 2026, ending DOP's 60-year dominance.

Don't overlook processing behavior. DOP solvates PVC faster, which can shorten gelation times in some calendering and extrusion lines. When switching to DOTP, processors may need to adjust temperature profiles or add a small amount of fast-fusing plasticizer. The 700 yuan/ton premium is often recovered through lower dosage rates in high-performance compounds.
