How do production technologies for sec-butanol differ in cost and environmental impact?
Traditional sec-butanol production uses indirect sulfuric acid hydration of n-butenes, which involves esterification, hydrolysis, distillation, and acid recovery. This route tolerates lower-grade C4 feedstocks and mild conditions, but it consumes large amounts of sulfuric acid and caustic soda, generates significant waste, and suffers from corrosion and lower selectivity. Direct hydration using solid acid resin or heteropolyacid catalysts operates under supercritical conditions, avoids acid neutralization and wastewater, and achieves sec-butanol selectivity up to 99%. However, single-pass conversion is only about 6%, requiring high-purity butene feedstocks to remain economical. An alternative route hydrolyzes sec-butyl acetate over fixed-bed catalysts, offering another pathway for producers seeking cleaner operations.
