How does NMP quality differ across battery, semiconductor and industrial applications?
NMP purity requirements diverge sharply by end use. Battery-grade material must exceed 99.9% purity with water content below 100ppm, since residual moisture harms electrode slurry and coating quality; domestic producers have largely closed the gap with imports on this metric. Semiconductor-grade is far stricter. G4 grade demands 99.99% purity, metal ions under 0.1ppb and water at or below 100ppm, while G5 grade pushes purity past 99.999%, single metal ions to 10ppt and water to 20-50ppm. These ultra-low-moisture grades serve photoresist stripping and wafer cleaning, where trace moisture or metals directly cut chip yield. Ion exchange resin purification is the enabling route.

The commercial reality is that most Chinese NMP volume still competes in battery and industrial grades, where price is the main lever. Electronic-grade is where the margin sits, but qualification cycles are long and BASF and Mitsubishi Chemical still hold the high ground. Moving up that curve is a multi-year project, not a quick upgrade.
