How is China's pyrolysis C5 utilization evolving and where do the growth opportunities lie?
China's pyrolysis C5 output reached about 2.60 million tons in 2023, with apparent consumption of 2.55 million tons. Domestic utilization remains concentrated in lower-value segments: C5 petroleum resin production of 471,000 tons, isoprene at 242,000 tons, piperylene at 231,000 tons, and dicyclopentadiene at 231,000 tons. Rubber and resin applications consume 77.4% of isoprene, leaving limited volumes for high-value fine chemicals like vitamins, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals. In contrast, global leaders such as Zeon in Japan achieve 70-85% C5 utilization through advanced product portfolios including COC/COP, specialty elastomers, and optical films. China still imports several C5 derivatives such as n-pentene, 2-pentanone, glutaraldehyde, and COC/COP, indicating substantial import substitution potential. The industry's challenge is shifting from homogeneous, low-barrier products toward differentiated, high-margin downstream chemistry.

    The gap with Japan is not just technology but also feedstock integration and market scale. China's C5 separation capacity is fragmented across many players, limiting the economics of deep processing. Policy support for high-end new materials and the build-out of integrated refining-petrochemical bases could gradually enable more sophisticated C5 valorization.
