How is China's sodium sulfide market structured in terms of capacity, output, and trade?
China dominates global sodium sulfide supply, with 2024 capacity at 1.05 million tonnes/year and output of 730,000 tonnes, representing over 80% of world production. Domestic apparent consumption stood at 606,800 tonnes. The industry is concentrated in Shanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, where feedstock and logistics advantages exist. Capacity utilization is around 70%, indicating some oversupply. China exported 123,200 tonnes in 2024, down 18.8% year-on-year, with export value falling 36.2% to RMB 396 million, reflecting weaker overseas demand and lower prices. The sector is consolidating as stricter environmental policies force smaller, less efficient producers out, raising industry concentration among key players like Shenzhou Jiaxin Chemical, Hubei Qinba New Materials, and Sichuan Liyuan Chemical.

The export decline is notable—volume fell less than value, suggesting price compression in overseas markets. Buyers should watch whether yellow flake, with lower iron content, continues displacing red flake in EU textile and leather applications, as this shifts product mix and pricing dynamics.
