Vanadium pentoxide production costs vary significantly by route. Steel-slag extraction costs are estimated at 60,000-80,000 yuan per tonne, while stone coal processing approaches 100,000 yuan per tonne, making it unviable at current market prices. Spot prices for V2O5 have averaged around 100,000 yuan per tonne over the past decade, with recent trading near that level. The processing margin from V2O5 to vanadium electrolyte is substantial: electrolyte sells at roughly 1,500 yuan per kWh, and storing one kWh requires about 10 kg of V2O5, implying a V2O5-equivalent price of 150,000 yuan per tonne in electrolyte form. This value-add of about 50,000 yuan per tonne reflects the processing and formulation costs. Major producers like Pangang have achieved vertical integration, controlling costs through captive vanadium slag from their steel operations, which gives them a competitive edge over standalone vanadium processors.

    Price volatility is a major concern for battery manufacturers. The 2021-2022 period saw significant price swings as steel demand and battery speculation pulled in opposite directions. Long-term supply contracts with indexation mechanisms are becoming more common between vanadium producers and electrolyte makers to manage this risk, but the market remains relatively thin and susceptible to speculative moves.
