Beta-phenethyl alcohol is prized for its rose-like odor and acts as a versatile blending agent in fragrances. Its main use is in rose-type perfumes for personal care and household products, where it competes with linalool on price. Beyond fragrances, it serves as a quality marker in grain-based cooking wines: Chinese industry standards specify that premium grades must contain over 60 mg/L of beta-phenethyl alcohol, as it contributes significantly to aroma and flavor. This dual demand from cosmetics and food condiments underpins steady consumption growth. Natural extraction from rose petals is commercially unviable—5 tonnes of flowers yield only 1 kg—so synthetic and bio-based routes dominate supply. The food-grade segment, however, is constrained by the carcinogenicity of chemical feedstocks, creating a niche for fermentation-derived product.
