What are the key quality specifications for battery-grade propylene carbonate?
Battery-grade propylene carbonate demands high purity, typically above 99.9%, with strict limits on moisture, metal ions, and other impurities that could degrade electrolyte performance. Unlike industrial-grade PC used in solvents or gas treatment, battery-grade material must withstand wide temperature ranges without crystallization, leveraging PC's low melting point of -49°C to maintain conductivity in cold conditions. In electrolyte formulations, PC is often blended with ethylene carbonate (EC) to suppress EC crystallization at low temperatures, improving low-temperature discharge capacity. Producers like Wanhua are building dedicated electronic-grade capacity, such as their 105,000 t/y PC unit in Penglai, to serve this premium segment. Quality certification and consistent batch-to-batch purity are critical for electrolyte makers, who typically lock in contracts with qualified suppliers rather than sourcing from spot markets.
