What is driving propylene carbonate demand beyond lithium battery electrolytes?
Propylene carbonate (PC) is far more than a battery electrolyte solvent. Its role as a polar solvent spans gas purification, where it absorbs CO2 from natural gas and ammonia synthesis streams, and as an extraction solvent for olefins and aromatics. It also serves as a plasticizer, spinning solvent, and dispersant for dyes and pigments. In polymer applications, PC is a key intermediate for polypropylene carbonate (PPC), a biodegradable material used in medical tapes and packaging. Recent capacity additions by major producers like Wanhua Chemical, including a 105,000 t/y unit in Penglai, and Fujian Baihong's 140,000 t/y plant, highlight that PC supply is expanding to feed downstream DMC production and other derivatives, not just batteries. This diversification cushions the market against volatility in any single end-use sector.

The CO2 absorption angle is often overlooked. With China's carbon neutrality push, PC's role in carbon capture from industrial gases could become a strategic growth area, potentially commanding premium pricing over battery-grade material.
