What are the main application segments for aluminum hydroxide, and how is the ultrafine flame-retardant market structured?

Aluminum hydroxide serves two broad markets: metallurgical alumina feedstock and non-metallurgical specialty products. The latter includes ultrafine grades, which combine amphoteric chemistry, bound water content, and high dehydration temperature to deliver flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and filling performance. These find use in electronics, plastics, rubber, paper, artificial marble, and toothpaste. China's ultrafine segment features numerous producers but only a few scale players—Luoyang Zhongchao, Chalco Shandong, Chalco Zhongzhou, and several Shandong-based firms. Domestic technology is advancing: Luoyang Zhongchao reports 85% yield on ultrafine powder with 98% particle uniformity via crystal-seed circulation and classification. Chalco's nano-grade H-42M has passed Showa Denko certification for high-end electronic packaging. Industry forecasts suggest domestic brands will capture over 70% of the premium ultrafine and pharmaceutical market by 2028, up from current import-dependent levels.

    The 70% localization forecast hinges on certification cycles, not just production capability. Japanese and Korean electronics customers require multi-year qualification. Also note the distinction between precipitated and ground grades—particle size distribution below 1 micron commands significant premiums. Buyers should specify target d50 and surface treatment, as these determine real performance in polymer compounds.
