What are the main applications of isopentane beyond blowing agents?
Isopentane is far more than a simple solvent. Its largest use is as a blowing agent for expandable polystyrene (EPS) and polyurethane rigid foam, where it is blended with n-pentane or cyclopentane to create fine cell structures with excellent insulation. It is also a key solvent and chain transfer agent in polyethylene production, particularly for LLDPE and full-density PE, helping control molecular weight distribution. In refrigeration, isopentane is used as a hydrocarbon refrigerant (R601a) and as a working fluid in geothermal and organic Rankine cycle systems. Additional applications include aerosol propellants, electronic cleaning, and chemical synthesis, such as dehydrogenation to isopentene and isopentadiene, or chlorination to isopentanol. Its zero ODP and very low GWP make it a preferred replacement for fluorinated blowing agents under the Kigali Amendment.

    The environmental angle is a strong demand driver. With global HFC phasedown underway, isopentane and n-pentane are cost-effective, low-GWP alternatives. However, flammability and VOC emissions remain constraints. Buyers should evaluate total cost including explosion-proof storage and handling, not just the product price per tonne.
