What is driving isopentane demand growth in China and how will prices trend?
China's isopentane market is expanding steadily, with domestic demand reaching about 160,000 tonnes in 2022. The two largest end-uses are polyethylene production, accounting for roughly 45% of demand, and industrial refrigeration at about 28%. PE producers use high-purity isopentane as a solvent for LLDPE and full-density PE, while the blowing agent segment for EPS and polyurethane foam remains a core outlet. Supply is fairly concentrated due to strict hazardous chemical regulations, with key producers including Dongying Junyuan, Guangzhou Helper, Heze Xileng and Shandong Chambroad. Prices are influenced by feedstock C5 availability from refinery and ethylene cracker streams, plus energy costs. We expect steady growth of 3-5% annually, supported by building insulation and cold-chain logistics demand, with prices tracking crude oil and regional supply-demand balances.
