What is driving the recent price surge in methyl acrylate and its esters?
Methyl acrylate prices have been lifted by a combination of rising feedstock costs and coordinated producer price hikes. In September, acrylic acid rose 200 yuan/ton and butyl acrylate jumped 400 yuan/ton, reflecting strong upward momentum across the acrylate complex. The cost push stems from higher upstream propylene and methanol prices, while supply-side discipline among major producers—including Wanhua Chemical, Satellite Chemical, and Qixiang Tengda—has reinforced the bullish sentiment. Market participants expect the tightness to persist as downstream demand from coatings and adhesives remains steady. However, the sustainability of these increases will depend on whether end-user industries can absorb higher raw material costs without throttling consumption.

Watch the feedstock spread closely. Historical data shows methyl acrylate margins have been more resilient than butyl acrylate, often holding above 50% profitability in strong years. If propylene costs keep climbing, producers with integrated propylene units—like Satellite Chemical—will gain a clear cost advantage over merchant buyers.
