Why is 2-butoxy ethanol (BCS) essential in both solvent-borne and waterborne coatings?
BCS holds a dual role in coatings that few solvents can match. In solvent-borne systems, it acts as a premium co-solvent that prevents film blushing in humid weather and mitigates substrate biting on plastics, where stronger solvents often cause defects. In waterborne formulations, BCS is valued for its amphiphilic nature—it dissolves both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components—and its relatively fast drying profile compared to alternatives like Texanol or DPM/DPnB. This makes it a cost-effective coalescent and flow additive for industrial paints, especially where faster dry times and good workability are required. Its balanced evaporation rate also improves leveling and gloss, reducing orange peel and brush marks in high-performance industrial coatings.
