Trade flows are shifting. While China historically imported 1-octanol, exports rose notably in 2022. The import dependency has fallen below 10%, but the market still sees periodic import spikes when domestic supply tightens. For buyers, tracking Shandong plant operating rates and new project timelines is more critical than watching global trade patterns.
The margin story is also structural. Large integrated producers like Satellite Chemical, Luxi Chemical, and Huachang Chemical achieve 25-28% gross margins due to scale, while smaller players struggle below 5%. This bifurcation means the high industry profit is not universal—it favors cost leaders. Watch for new capacity from Hebei Haihang's 800,000-tonne project, which could shift the balance.
The cycle also impacts related products. 1-Octanol and n-butanol are co-produced, and their price spread normally hovers around 1,000 yuan per tonne. But in 2022, the spread widened to over 3,000 yuan for months, signaling unusual market dislocations. Producers can flex output between the two, so monitoring both markets is essential for understanding 1-octanol supply dynamics.
