Why is BASF shutting down its adipic acid plant in Ludwigshafen, and what does it mean for global supply?

The BASF exit is a structural signal, not just a cyclical one. Buyers should watch for tighter spot availability in Europe and potentially higher import dependence on Asian material. For Chinese sellers, this opens export opportunities, but freight and anti-dumping risks remain key variables to monitor.

Why are adipic acid producers in China facing negative margins despite strong downstream growth?

The negative margin is a short-term pain point, but it also accelerates capacity consolidation. Smaller, non-integrated producers will likely cut output or exit, which historically sets the stage for a price rebound. For buyers, locking in medium-term contracts now could be prudent before the supply-demand balance tightens.

Overview

Adipic acid (1,4-butanedicarboxylic acid, CAS 124-04-9) is a white crystalline powder with a melting point of 151–154°C and limited water solubility. It is a key dicarboxylic acid used primarily as a monomer for nylon 66 and in polyester production.

Industrial: raw material for nylon 66, polyurethane, and polyester manufacturing.
Food & additives: used in food additives, flavourings, and as an acidulant.
Pharmaceuticals: serves as an intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis.
Coatings & plastics: applied in coatings, dyes, plastic foaming agents, and lubricants.

China is the world's largest adipic acid producer, with domestic capacity accounting for over half of global output. Production predominantly uses the cyclohexene route, while overseas producers mainly employ the cyclohexane process. The industry has faced oversupply, with operating rates around 55–68% in recent years, though demand growth from biodegradable plastics like PBAT has provided new momentum.

Key domestic producers:
Chongqing Huafeng – largest global producer with integrated downstream polyurethane and nylon chains.
Henan Shenma – integrated producer with downstream PU and PA66 operations.
Hualu Hengsheng – cost-competitive producer leveraging process optimisation and nitric acid synergies.
Haili Chemical – major producer with significant capacity.
Shanxi Fengxi – active in adipic acid production.
