The BHT market is a major para-cresol consumer, and its growth is tied to rubber and plastics industries. With China's push toward higher-quality antioxidants, purity grades above 99.9% are gaining premium pricing. Producers with integrated, high-purity para-cresol capacity will have a competitive edge over those relying on mixed cresol separation.
The menthol chain is the real growth story here. Each tonne of L-menthol consumes roughly 1.5 tonnes of thymol, which in turn needs about 1 tonne of meta-cresol. With Wanhua and NHU both advancing menthol projects, expect meta-cresol demand to tighten further, potentially supporting higher domestic prices despite new capacity.
Regulatory pressure on cresol's toxicity profile is a key market factor. While PCMX and quaternary ammonium compounds are replacing cresol in consumer goods, industrial and agricultural disinfectant demand remains sticky. Watch for stricter occupational exposure limits in China, which could raise production costs and favor larger, better-equipped manufacturers.
