What are the key safety and handling requirements for industrial butane storage and compression?
Butane's flammability (explosive range 1.9%-8.5% in air) and easy liquefaction demand rigorous engineering controls. Industrial compression systems must match the application: reciprocating compressors suit intermittent tanker unloading via pressure differential; screw compressors handle continuous 24/7 process duty with better tolerance for fluctuating inlet conditions; diaphragm compressors are mandatory for high-purity electronic-grade butane to prevent oil or particulate contamination. Core auxiliary systems include interstage cooling (gas must drop below 40°C between stages), lubrication isolation (crankcase oil must never contact butane gas), and automated protection covering over-temperature, over-pressure, motor overload, and vibration alarms. Storage tanks require pressure relief and temperature monitoring—butane must not exceed 40°C during storage or use, as higher temperatures raise vapor pressure and rupture risk, a common cause of portable cassette stove explosions.
