Why is DPHP plasticizer replacing DOP in automotive and cable applications?
DPHP is gaining ground over DOP because DOP-plasticized PVC shows weaker fogging, high-temperature performance, oil resistance, and water resistance. These shortcomings fail modern automotive, cable, and waterproofing building material specs. DPHP, made from 2-propylheptanol, delivers better heat aging, lower volatility, lower fogging, and improved extraction resistance. EU and US producers have been cutting DOP output in favor of DINP, DIDP, and DPHP, backed by EU safety assessments confirming no hazard to human health or the environment. Cost remains the main barrier to full DOP replacement. BASF is currently the sole commercial supplier of 2-PH and DPHP, having converted a 120 kt/a DOP plant in the US to 2-PH production in 2006.

    The substitution trend is real but gradual. DPHP's price premium over DOP narrows when feedstock butenes are cheap, as China has abundant C4 byproduct streams. Watch for domestic 2-PH capacity additions—Yan'an Energy's butanol/2-PH co-production unit is the first of its kind globally and could shift the cost curve.
