Chemical synthesis: acts as a methylating agent for hydroxyl groups, using reagents such as dimethyl sulfate, iodomethane, or diazomethane.
Industrial: used as a propellant in aerosols for hair care, skincare, pharmaceuticals, and coatings, and as a refrigerant, foaming agent, and solvent.
Energy: a substitute for LPG and petroleum fuels, burning without environmentally damaging emissions.
Pharmaceutical & agrochemical: an intermediate in producing dimethyl sulfate, N,N-dimethylaniline, methyl acetate, and acetic anhydride.

China's dimethyl ether sector has faced overcapacity, with production and consumption declining in recent years as outdated capacity is phased out. Output is primarily derived from methanol via dehydration processes, often integrated with coal chemical complexes. Domestic supply has generally met demand, though market prices have been influenced by upstream methanol costs.
