N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF, CAS 68-12-2) is a colourless, high-boiling polar aprotic solvent with a faint amine odour, fully miscible with water and most organic solvents. It serves as a versatile solvent and synthetic building block across pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and electronics.

Solvent use: dissolves a wide range of organic compounds and some inorganic salts, enabling homogeneous reactions.
Synthesis: acts as a formyl, cyano, amine, or carbonyl source in reactions such as Vilsmeier–Haack formylation and nucleophilic aromatic substitution.
Industrial: used in synthetic leather, acrylic fibre processing, and as a reaction medium in polymer and fine chemical production.
Safety note: decomposes near its boiling point (153 °C) to release dimethylamine and CO; hydrolysis under acid or base can generate pressure and hazardous by-products.

China is a net exporter of DMF, with production exceeding domestic demand; output is dominated by large-scale continuous processes based on CO insertion into dimethylamine or methyl formate routes. Export volumes and prices have shown notable fluctuations in recent years.
