How will commercial supercritical CO2 power generation impact industrial CO2 demand and pricing?

This is more about energy efficiency than CO2 consumption. The real market signal is for CO2 capture projects: if waste-heat-to-power becomes standard, it lowers the operating cost of capture facilities by offsetting electricity use. Watch for policy subsidies that bundle SCO2 power with CCUS mandates.

Can CO2-to-chemicals routes like methanol and starch become commercially viable at scale?

The bottleneck is not chemistry but economics. Without a carbon price above $50-100/tonne, most CO2-to-chemical routes cannot compete with fossil feedstocks. The exception is urea and organic carbonates, already commercial. For traders, watch policy-driven demand for CO2 as feedstock in methanol plants near hydrogen hubs.

Why is CO2 storage gaining traction as a grid-scale 'battery' and what does it mean for CO2 supply?

This is a niche but growing CO2 offtake. Each 100 MW/400 MWh system needs roughly 10,000-20,000 tonnes of CO2 for initial charge. With dozens of projects planned, that could add up to several hundred thousand tonnes of demand—small versus EOR but steady and price-insensitive. Food-grade CO2 suppliers should watch for industrial-grade contracts.

Overview

Carbon dioxide (CO₂, CAS 124-38-9) is a colourless, odourless gas with a density of 1.854 g/cm³, sublimating at −78.5 °C. It serves as a versatile industrial gas, chemical feedstock, and carbon source across multiple sectors.

Food & beverage: used for carbonation in soft drinks and beer, as well as food-grade liquid CO₂ for packaging and preservation.
Industrial: a feedstock for synthesising methanol, gasoline, and starch, though commercial viability remains constrained by energy costs.
Semiconductor: high-purity CO₂ (99.999%) is essential for supercritical cleaning in advanced chip manufacturing.
CCUS: captured from power plants and chemical facilities for utilisation or underground storage, supporting carbon-reduction goals.

China's production landscape spans industrial-grade (often surplus) and high-purity electronic/food grades (tighter supply). Feedstock is primarily recovered from petrochemical tail gas and coal chemical exhaust, with growing capacity for liquefied CO₂ projects. Domestic producers are expanding electronic-grade capacity amid rising semiconductor demand.

Key domestic producers:
Kaimeite Gas – food-grade liquid CO₂ leader with electronic-grade capacity.
Huate Gas – high-purity electronic specialty gases.
Jinhong Gas – electronic and industrial gas supplier.
Xinjiang Yaochang Huicheng – liquid CO₂ from coal chemical waste gas.
