Sodium hydroxide (NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2), commonly known as caustic soda, is a white, highly corrosive solid that dissolves readily in water with strong exothermic release. It is a foundational inorganic alkali used across numerous industrial sectors.

Industrial: a key raw material in alumina production, pulp and paper, textile dyeing, soap and detergent manufacturing, and petroleum refining.
Chemical: used in the synthesis of downstream chemicals, including sodium salts and organic intermediates.
Water treatment: employed for pH adjustment and neutralization of acidic effluents.
Food processing: applied in peeling fruits and vegetables and as a food additive in certain processes.

China is the world's largest producer and consumer of caustic soda, with production concentrated in regions rich in salt resources. The dominant manufacturing route is the ion-exchange membrane electrolysis of brine, which co-produces chlorine and hydrogen.
